Welcome to the webcomic
Welcome to the second webcomic I ever made – 95 Gallons
It ran from early 2007 to 2009 where I completed it.
Does it hold up? I’m not sure, but first some HISTORY –
When I was younger one of my earlier comic ideas (regular comics, as there really wasn’t much of a WEB yet) was about fish. As I grew older that idea faded, until a little movie called “Finding Nemo” came out in the summer of 2003. For some reason that film really got to me. I ended up seeing it nine times in the theater. Anyway, with my love of drawing fish back I set off to make a new aquatic comic idea.
I ended settling on this comic here – a world that starts off as an aquarium but gets twisted into something a little more familiar. For reference, remember that this was late 2006 when the economy was rough and people were cranky. Now today they’re … angry? I digress. The comic was hand drawn with ink, scanned, then colored on the computer. However the backgrounds were edits of a few watercolor drawings I had scanned in and used in various ways.
So again – Does it hold up? While I still love the painted backgrounds and enjoy some of the panel layouts, all I can think about is how much better I could draw this today over a decade later. But that’s to be expected as all artists tend to dislike their old artwork. I suppose old stuff is also great for showing someone’s growth. As for the actually story, well, I suppose we think the same way about our world views as we grow as people too. To be honest I need to slowly re-read the comic along with you because I don’t actually remember much myself! Maybe its words still sting true, maybe it’s cringy and weak? Is the whole thing ruined because people yelling obvious things every time isn’t funny? If it’s still enjoyable that makes it okay in the end?
Well whatever this comic is, I know some people remember it fondly so it’s mostly back up for them. If they enjoyed it then maybe you’ll enjoy it too.
